Handsome and imposing in appearance, and of open and far-ranging mind, Gǎo [Mù] was fiercely independent and did exactly as he pleased. Neither joy nor anger were expressed on his face.

Sometimes he stayed shut up in his room studying books for several months on end, without ever going out; sometimes he went up into the mountains or to the waterside, forgetting for several days to return home.

He read an enormous amount and had a special love for Zhuangzi and Laozi.

He was a great drinker, was skilled in whistling, and loved calligraphy and poetry. When he was happy, he would quite forget himself. His contemporaries often called him a fool.
